Barbara Jordan, the first African-American woman from a Southern state to serve in Congress, became a national figure during the House impeachment proceedings of President Richard M. Nixon. The House Judiciary Committee approved two articles of impeachment in July 1974 in response to Nixon's involvement in the Watergate break-in. The articles never reached a vote, however, as Nixon resigned from office on August 9, 1974.
